Now Playing... I'll Take Romance

A NOTE FROM EYDIE

The year was 1956. I had made some singles before this time for Coral Records that were very well received but now, with the great combined arranging and conducting talents of Don Costa, Marion Evans and Sid Feller, we were preparing my very first original album. The songs are wonderful, many of which were the first ones I learned while growing up and going to school in New York City. No gymnasium dance was complete without hearing Sinatra's wonderful record of "Saturday Night is the Loneliest Night of the Week".

I had already been a regular member of the great "Steve Allen Show" for three years (out of a total of 5 years). I sang a different song or two every single night, no repeats, which is how I learned all the wonderful standards written by the best American writers. I tried to treat the standards a little differently so as to make them more interesting to a new audience. "I'll Take Romance" was already a big hit for me when I ran into Oscar Hammerstein one day on Fifth Avenue; he said to me "What did you do to my song?" I replied... "Pretty good... huh?" he said, "No, not good... Great! Wow!"

The three new songs were my original recording and became standards as well... from new faces, "Guess Who I Saw Today", "Too Close For Comfort" from "Mr. Wonderful" with Sammy Davis Jr. and "First Impressions" by Moose Charlap and Carolyn Leigh. The album was a smash. Jerry Lewis booked me into the world famous Palace Theatre in New York with him, and I was whisked off to the "El Rancho Vegas" in Las Vegas by Joe E. Lewis in the same year.

The rest as they say, is history. So... there you have it. Enjoy this terrific album, see you on the inside.

Sincerely,

Eydie Gormé
