Now Playing... Once In A Lifetime

A Note From Steve...

My record of "Go Away Little Girl" was the number one record in the country... and my Broadway show "What Makes Sammy Run" was a big hit and after two years we were closing.

In 1965 John Schneider was the president of CBS and a big fan of mine. He asked if I would be interested in doing a television variety show. I said, "Let me think about it and I'll get back to you."

He said okay and headed for the door,
Before he could turn the knob, I said...
"Hold it... I thought it over... I'll do it!"
He turned around and we walked toward each other and shook hands...and that was the start of a long and wonderful friendship.

In those days, TV shows ran in 13 week cycles. A full season was 39 weeks. We immediately began putting together a good creative team and a great list of performers who appeared on the show.

Unfortunately, we were the last and only show that broadcast in black and white. Even Walter Cronkite and the news was already in color... "and that's the way it was!"

I loved doing the show and we received lots of good reviews and nice comments... Unfortunately the ratings weren't there...and after 13 weeks... neither was I.

We had great guest like Lucille Ball, Bobby Darin, Anthony Newley, Phyllis Diller, Charles Nelson
Reilly (his first TV show), Frankie Avalon, Connie Stevens, Jack Jones, The 'Great One' Jackie Gleason," and the really great one, "Eydie Gorme," Mrs. Steve Lawrence was my only guest on my last show...and the only show in color. A little late, but great!

This CD contains many of the songs I sang on..."The Steve Lawrence Show."
