A NOTE FROM STEVE... In 1960, Don Costa and I completed our first album for United Artist's Records, "The Steve Lawrence Sound". The best composers and lyricists of our time wrote the songs. They are still considered to be the finest of our American popular standards. We recorded two new songs for this album... "Mademoiselle" and "You, Only You" written by Moose Charlap and Judge White. Moose was a good friend and like Mercer, Arlen, Cahn and Irving Berlin, he could sell a song with the best of them. He convinced us that his songs were in keeping with the quality of the standards we had already selected. He was so right! Don Costa's orchestration, as usual, were incredible, making it easy for me to musically navigate the maiden voyage for this new company. A year later, Don played a new song for me. I loved it. We recorded it. "Portrait of My Love" became a very big hit for me. While it was still on the charts as a best seller, we recorded an album using "Portrait of My Love" as the title. Both albums sold very well. Whether you listen at home or in a car, I know you will enjoy these two original LP's on one CD. Sincerely, Steve Lawrence |
