A NOTE FROM STEVE...

Marion Evans was born and grew up in Goodwater, Alabama, 50 miles south of Birmingham. His mother was an accomplished pianist who played at the Conservatory in Alabama. He began studying music and composition with his mother (at the time of this writing, she is 104 years old and plays piano everyday).

Many years later, after being discharged from the U.S. Marine Corp., Marion moved to New York to study at the Julliard School of Music. He took an apartment on West 76th Street. Don Costa had an apartment on West 75th Street. Nelson Riddle, Nick Perito, Billy Byers, Neil Hefti and Burt Bacharach were some of the other great talents who lived in the area. Pretty good musical neighborhood wouldn't you say? Early in my recording career I worked with Don Costa and Marion Evans. We began a long professional and personal relationship which I treasure to this day.

In 1962 I was recording from Columbia Records. Marion and I had the #1 record in the country, "Go Away Little Girl". We now decided to do a a big band swinging album of some of the great country/western songs. When the arrangements were done we booked the studio where Marion assembled the greatest musicians in town. April 16th 1963, was... "The Day The West Was Swung!"

So... turn the music-up, saddle-up and giddy-up and let's go... "Swingin' West!"

Sincerely,

Steve Lawrence
